“Tea Set: Pottery as a Cultural Medium”
In a world that’s always rushing forward, sometimes the best way to learn is to go back to the earth, to the roots, to culture.
Just outside the buzz of Bangkok, nestled along the Chao Phraya River, Koh Kret, a hidden gem known for its centuries-old pottery traditions.
This was where our journey began.
In an inspiring fusion of creativity and culture, students from the Creative Design Entrepreneurship (CDE) program joined hands with Chinese students from the BBA International Program for a one-of-a-kind experiential learning journey at the charming Koh Kret pottery village in Nonthaburi.
“Tea Set: Pottery as a Cultural Medium,” the project encouraged students to step beyond the classroom and into the world of traditional Thai craftsmanship.
The activity, designed as part of the general education course, paired each student 1:1 with a buddy from the BBA program, promoting not only creative collaboration but also cross-cultural friendship. Together, each pair designed and handcrafted a unique tea set, blending Thai and Chinese cultural elements with their own personal artistic flair.
The event highlighted the role of design as a bridge between cultures, using traditional forms like the tea set to explore identity, heritage, and innovation. From lotus-inspired teapots to cups adorned with Chinese characters, each creation told a story of unity and imagination.
“We didn’t just create pottery , but we created stories,” shared one CDE student. “Every cup and teapot reflects not just design choices, but conversations, laughter, and shared ideas.”
The scenic environment of Koh Kret , a community renowned for its centuries-old Mon pottery tradition, provided the perfect backdrop for this cultural immersion. Local artisans guided the students through the process of clay shaping, carving, and detailing, while sharing insights into the history and significance of their craft.
The program coordinators said
“This kind of hands-on learning is invaluable”
“It’s about more than design — it’s about empathy, collaboration, and cultural appreciation.”
The day concluded with a joyful showcase of all the student-made tea sets, each a symbol of the powerful connection between art, culture, and young creative minds.
